Recorded April 2009 at Dreamscape Studio, Amon Duul 2 celebrated a highly sensitive performance, of finding back to the roots – not in the past, but essentially – seeking the new sounds and contents at the same time. No ‘kraut’, no ’70s’, but the music of the new millenium. This sound painting is one more of our unique works, containing the spirit of our time.

“Bee as Such” is currently available only through Internet download, destined to be released on physical media on a later date.

Having split up in the 1970's, abortive attempts were made thereafter to reform Amon Duul II. In 1996, the efforts were finally successful, and a reformation did actually take place. Live in Tokyo documents that reunion, with many of the former band members returning for the event.
The set list covers the band's history, from the early 1970's through to 1995's Nada moonshine number, with no less than six tracks from that album being included. Many of these later songs are presented here in abbreviated format as a sort of taster for the album, although Kiss ma eee retains its full length. The early days are given relatively brief coverage, but Wolf city from 1973 does provide several songs.
The performances are credibly tight, with songs such as Deutch Nepal having an almost symphonic quality. At times, it sounds as if Marianne Faithful has joined as a guest vocalist, Casaneda Dadream being unintentionally amusing in this respect.
Some of the song titles have been modified, Dry your eyes being more familiar as Race From Here To Your Ears, and more specifically the Riding on a cloud section of that track. Whether the title modifications are by the band, or simply indicate a lack of historical awareness on the part of the publishers is not clear. On a similar tack, La paloma borrows its melody from Engelbert's Spanish eyes!
The highlight for me is the 8½ minute epic Surrounded by the stars, a song which appeared as a bonus track on the Nada Moonshine # album. The frantic violin and synth workouts offer definitive reassurance that there is life in the old dog yet. To ensure that the fans go home happy, Archangel thunderbird is given a spirited run through towards the end of the gig, although I have to say I prefer the Live in London version.
There has been some debate among fans about whether the band's reunion and the subsequent tour were wise. Some feel that this album simply documents a sort of tribute to the band's early days, while lacking the very invention and originality which was the foundation of their appeal. Others opine that these recordings prove that the band was still very much alive, and capable of delivering something unique and enjoyable. In the end, you pay your money and you make your choice.
For me, as someone who is by no means a committed fan and is therefore able to approach with a degree of impartiality, this is a thoroughly enjoyable set. The musicianship if superb, and the overall atmosphere refreshingly different.

Amon Düül II - 1996 - Kobe (Reconstruction)

Kobe (Reconstruction)

01. Hallimasch (11:29)
02. Kupplungen (13:25)
03. Kronwinkel 13 - Der Große Herd (11:03)
04. Verwandschaft (0:24)
05. Trabbi-Town (14:47)
06. Tramin BF 309 (14:33)

Kobe (Reconstruction) is arguably the first of two records apparently published to raise money (?) for the reconstruction of Japan after the Kobe earthquake and then sold exclusively in Japan (?!).

None of the music contained in these records is new: they present just one long track per album, which is a hodgepodge of released and unreleased jam snippets from 1969/1970; most of the themes are well known to Düül fans even if the titles are misleading and do not mention them.

Historically this could have some importance for the unreleased material, which summarily hints at Düül II's method of composition in the old days: spontaneous jams are then organized in parts with the addition of previously composed material to forge songs such as Soap Shop Rock (of which we have some parts on here too).

Anyway, the piece's structure is offensively deceptive, with continuous audio editing and mixing themes which do not fit each other at all, meaning that the result is dodgy, confused, dilated, boring and seems to go nowhere. The complete absence of sung parts makes it even harder to sit through the whole listening.

Amon Düül II - 1996 - Eternal Flashback

Eternal Flashback

01. Eternal Flashback (67:49)

Originally given away free to people who ordered enough other Amon Düül CDs from the record label with material from 1969 to 1971 reworked by members of the group into one seamless space rock epic.

All that could be said about Eternal Flashback has already been said for its "twin" record Kobe; here we have another long piece articulated in 7 parts in which snippets of unreleased and (mostly) released music from 1969-1970 are mixed, juxtaposed and sometimes even randomly overdubbed to each other.

The lack of material forces the compilators to repeat the same themes twice or more, like with Kanaan, that could be considered the main theme of the album; in fact this record mostly takes sources from the Phallus Dei period (and most of it from the Phallus Dei album itself), while Kobe was a bit more Yeti-oriented.

Amon Düül is kinda of everything. I've never experienced a band, that tried like six different genres. But i must say I like the album, definitely not their best album, in my oppinion. But this is a band who really tries every genre they can. Personally I like their first three albums the best, and I was surprised to hear Viva La Trance, the album wasn't Krautrock or anything like that. And since then I don't think they made the same albums as the three ones they started with. But you know what, it's okay to have a little variety in the genres. I like this album, because its experiemental, and when you see it in that perspective, you can almostt say, that every Amon Düül II album is a great album. Yes they started a to make albums, with pop elements, but just because it's not their original sound, it can still be good albums.

Not as Good, as Live in London but still a very good, recorded live at the Golders Green Hippodrome For the BBC in 1973 Duul's Live playing is at time's some what Chaotic , but then again that adds a certain charm to the Music the stand out tracks for me are Green Bubble Raincoated Man and Trap both these Tracks featuring the Wonderful Renate Knaup on Vocals , and from the First Album Kanaan which features some Sweet Guitar Playing by John Weinzrel , the cd also features two Bonus Tracks Taken from the Dance of the Lemmings sessions, Marilyn Monroe Memorial Drums the Title of that track just about tells you what it is and the final track Chewing Gum Telegram which is some typical Amon Duul2 Jamming , if your looking for some Amon Duul 2 for the first time this Cd would not be for you Try Wolf City or Yeti , But if your a Duul2 fan then this Cd is essential to your Collection.
